Cachar College
Cachar College is a co-educational institution established in 1960 at Silchar, India. It offers Intermediate (10+2 level) and First Degree Level (10+2+3 level) courses in Arts, Commerce and Science. The college is recognized by the UGC under Sections 2(f) and 12 (B) and is affiliated to Assam University, Silchar. The college has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with B status.
COLLEGE PROFILE
History :
Cachar College has a chequered past. In the early sixties of the last century, the then prevailing historical realities called for expansion of the scope of higher education in the Valley. At that juncture some leading citizens and academicians of Silchar mooted the idea of opening a college in the town. Accordingly, the idea was given a final shape in a meeting held on 25 April 1960 in the Sramik Kalyan Office. The process culminated in the birth of Cachar College on 20 June, 1960. The next year the College obtained Pre-university level permanent affiliation for Arts and Commerce from Gauhati University. The same year the College, initially located in Narsing High School premises, was shifted to its present site. And close to that the construction of the College building got underway with joint grants from the Union Relief & Rehabilitaion Ministry and the Govt. of Assam. In 1966 Assam Govt. brought the College under the system of Deficit Grants-in-Aid. In 1981-82 academic session, the Science wing of the College was opened. And the wing received Govt. approval for Grants-in-Aid in 1990. Consequent on the inception of Assam University in 1994 and as per the new official arrangements, the Degree programmes of the college, hitherto affiliated to Gauhati University, came to be affiliated to the former.
Location :
Cachar College is located on the artery of Silchar, the largest city of Barak Valley and the second largest city of Assam. The College is about one km off the Railway Station, twenty kms from Kumbhirgram Airport and 4 k.m. from ISBT, Silchar. The College is well connected by both road and water transports with sub-urban towns and neighbouring rural areas.
Campus :
The College building stands on 5.3 acre of land. While the Women’s Hostel campus is separately located at walking distance from the main campus, the latter houses academic and administrative wings along with all support services in a well-protected walled precinct.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION :
Praktanee is an association of the ex-students of Cachar college The primary aim of this association is to bring about better co-ordination between college administration and past students of the college and the facilitate their sincere attitude of helping the college in every sphere of its development. The association assists the college authorities to promote, foster and encourage educational, social-cultural and games & sports particularly for betterment of the students of the college so that they can maintain high standards of honesty, courtesy and manliness by developing their character.
SUPPORT SERVICES
CENTRAL LIBRARY :
The College has a central library in addition to some departmental libraries. The Central Library is equipped with borrowing, reading and reference sections.
E-LIBRARY :
Co-ordinator of E-library : Dr. Shilpi Dutta Majumder email: shilpidm@gmail.com Website : https//hrd.inflibnet.ac.in Setting-up of Digital Library as part of the central library has been constructed under Infrastructural Development Grant provided by the Govt. of Assam, which will facilitate (both students as will as teachers) an easy access and retrieval to information, content of the Central Library. Dr. Shilpi Dutta Majumder, Assistant Professor, Dept. Of Sanskrit is the coordinator of the E-library. Colleges has also subscribed Ejournals.
DIGITAL CLASSROOM :
The construction and setting-up of 2 (two) Digital classrooms with ideal facilities capable of teaching upto 48 students in a batch in each room has been completed recently under infrastructural Development Grant provided by the Govt. of Assam.
HOSTEL ACCOMODATION (For Girls Students):
The College provides Hostel accomodation for the bonafide girls students. The admisssion in the Hostel will be provided subject to the availability of vacant seats. The total accomodtion in the Girls Hostel is 50. The desired students will have to apply separately (offline) after taking admission in the College. The entire hostel campus is under CCTV survilence.
POLICY DOCUMENT OF THE COLLEGE FOR AWARD OF SCHOLARSHIP/FREESHIP
The College has a statutory Aid and Award Committee which monitors the mechanism of providing Aids to the poor, and Award to the meritorious students. A separate Scholarship Window is available in College Office to facilitate the official processing of all Scholarship Applications. The following Scholarship schemes are availed by student in the College:
1. Poor Student Aid Fund: Under this scheme, a fund was raised from Admission Fee of the students in specific head every year. From this Aid Fund, students from Arts, Science and Commerce were selected based on their application and Family Income Certificate. The cash amount is decided by the available fund and the number of applicants every year. The selection of poor, but meritorious students for Aid is disposed of by the Aid and Award Committee. However, from 2017-18 onwards, this fund collection has been discontinued in view of the introduction of Fee-waiver scheme by the Govt. of Assam.
2. Govt. of India National Scholarships: SC, ST, OBC, Minority Scholarships, Ishan Uday etc. are availed by the Degree as well as Higher Secondary students of all streams every year as per Notifications for the same served time to time.
3. Scholarship under "Suhrid Scheme of Govt. of Assam": The Students of the College are also benefitted by this scheme every year. The scholarship is given to the beneficiaries through local MLA Fund.
4. Award to the Best Performer: Students securing highest marks in Arts, Science and Commerce at College/University/Council Examination receive Cash Awards and Certificates under the aegis of the Aid and Award Committee of the College.
5. "Aruna Tarapada Bhattacharjee Memorial Award": This Award is given to the best graduate of Cachar College irrespective of all streams. This is sponsored by Prof. Tapadhir Bhattacharjee, Former Vice-Chancellor, Assam University Silchar and Former Faculty, Sanskrit, Cachar College. A Cash Amount and Certificate is given as part of this Memorial Award.
6. "Uma- Rathi Environmental Award": This Award is sponsored by Prof. Parthankar Choudhury, Professor, Assam University Silchar and Former Faculty, Zoology, Cachar College in memory of his Parents. Cash Award of Rs. 2000 (Two thousand only) snd Certificate is given to the student obtaining the highest marks in Foundation Course in Environmental Studies (FCES) in Degree Final Year/Semester under Assam University, Silchar.
7. "Soumyajit Guha Merit Award in Bengali": This is awarded to the student scoring highest marks in Bengali Honours in the College every year. This memorial Award was instituted by Prof. Archana Guha (Retd.), Department of Bengali, Cachar College, in the name of her beloved Son who lost his life during a Mountaineering Training Programme held in Himachal Pradesh.
8. "Soumyajit Guha Excellence Award in Economics": This is awarded every year to the Best Performer in Economics Honours under Assam University, Silchar. This memorial Award was also instituted by Prof. Archana Guha (Retd.), Department of Bengali, Cachar College, in the name of her beloved Son.
CENTRAL COMPUTER LABORATORY :
The Central Computer Laboratory caters to the needs of the students of degree programmes who have practical papers on computer applications. The Centre is also used for in-house training of the faculty on rotational basis. With Broadband internet facilities the CCL is sponsored by DST & UGC is all set to be LAN compliant once the fast going automation process in Central Library, administrative wing and academic departments is given final touch.
RESEARCH CELL :

CANTEEN :
The College has a well furnished wet canteen which remains open during class hours and examination days throughout the year. The statutory canteen committee keeps vigil on the service quality, quantity and quality of the edible staff and beverages sold in the canteen.
BOYS’ COMMON ROOM :
Boys’ Common Room of the College has some in-door and recreational facilities. Both up-keep and improvement of the facilities therein are monitored by a secretary and an assistant secretary of the Executive Council of CCSU under a teacher-in-charge.
GIRLS’ COMMON ROOM :
Girls’ Common Room has good sitting arrangements with attached toilet / lavatory block, round-the-clock water supply and a cloak room. Indoor games facilities are also available inside the room. A woman attendant is posted there for any service required. Both upkeep and improvement of the facilities in the GCR are monitored by a secretary of the Executive Council of CCSU under a lady teacher-in-charge.
HEALTH CENTRE :
A one-room Health Centre on a modest scale exists in the College. A trained nurse is posted there. Emergency first aid facilities are available. However, an official arrangement has been established with a nearby private nursing home wherefrom on-demand-round-the-clock medical service can be hired.
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES :
The College management always encourages co-curricular talents in the students. The Cachar College Students’ Union has a music and dramatic club and a debating club. Students having interest and penchant in debating, quizzing, acting in drama, recitation, singing etc. have enough scope to perform during the annual social week and also on various occasions throughout the year. The College has wings for NCC and NSS. Plans are afoot to bring maximum number of students under these twin wings. As the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has made it mandatory for the 10+2 students to be engaged in one or the other co-curricular activities, students are advised to keep the College office informed about their co-curricular involvement. Various departments of Cachar College published their annual journals. The name of Bengali Departmental journal is ‘Pratham Aalo’, the journal of Sanskrit Department is ‘Prajna Bharati’ and Manipuri Department has ‘Meira’. Cachar College always proved to be a spotter’s paradise in sporting talents. In group events like football, volley ball and cricket and also in individual events like track and field and athletics, Cachar College students have excelled in inter-club, inter-state and in some cases, national level competitions. Even though the College does not have a play ground or infrastructure for outdoor sports, by virtue of its membership in the District Sports Association, budding talents do not go unnoticed. Close linkage of the College with the DSA has proved to be a very good arrangement in spotting talents of the College and placing them in the right orbit.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES :
The College has an Extension Activities Centre with two teachers at the helm of affairs. Though the activities are yet to pick up and gain expected momentum, already some health awareness camps, blood donation camps by National Service Scheme funded by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India and environment camps from the College have been organized in far-flung areas. Students having zeal and commitment to serve the community and reach out to those in need will find excellent environment in this College.
Adoption of Village :
The college has adopted one village named ‘Masughat’ under Greater Dudhpatil Area of Cachar District in 2017 with a view to promote socio-economic-cultural & educational development of the village as part of the commitment of Institutional Social responsibility. In order to achieve the objective the college has organized two Free Medical (Health-Check up) Camps at Masughat High School and Daspara with active participation of NSS Unit and distributed free medicines to more than 500 patients of the village. In another endeaver, clothings of various age groups were distributed to more than 300 beneficiaries. Further, 60 households of the village were selected and plantation initiatives were undertaken to plant valuable fruit plants in association with NSS Unit of the College.
Women Cell (Sucheta) :
With an eye to ensuring a gender-sensitive and congenial work atmosphere Cachar College has formed a women's cell with the name and style "Sucheta" constituted of the women faculty of the college on December 2014.With the objective of promoting gender equity and sensitise the students and staff on issues relating to women empowerment and rights, the cell organizes lectures, awareness programmes, camps, self defence courses, career counseling programmes etc.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan :
The NSS Unit of the college is engaged with monthly cleaning of the college campus as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Mission. College takes all the necessary measures to make the campus plastic free. Further, a special cleanliness drive has been organised by the college time to time with active participation of NSS/NCC volunteers and all teaching and no -teaching staff. 3.13.4. Plantation Programme : The NSS Unit of the college organizes plantation programme in the college campus every year.
