Gurucharan College, popularly known as GC College, recently upgraded to a State University under Assam Government, is a college imparting 10+2, undergraduate, certifications (self-financing) and postgraduate (self-financing) education under the aegis of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council, Guwahati and Assam University, Silchar.

One of the most popular and having strength of 5000 students, this institution is the primary educational institution for the students of South Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.

History Of Gurucharan College

Gurucharan College, established on 15th July 1935, is recognised as one of the premier institutions in the field of Collegiate education. It has carved out a distinct identity of its own in the field of higher education in the eastern part of India. The well-acclamed reputation of the college stands not on its vast area of land, buildings constructed on it or on its enrolment strength but on its enriched academic and intellectual legacy built up during the time-span of 87 years of its life al the cost of effort and sacrifices of a batch of dedicated personalities who left no stone unturned to erect this huge edifice of higher education in this Barak Valley. Today, this institution of potential excellence is proud to have a large number of alumni who have established themselves in different professions and vocations of life in India and abroad.

Initially, the college was housed in a Bungalow of one Late Promode Chandra Datta at Rongpur on the bank of the river Barak. When the river bank erosion began to swallow the college premises, it was shifted temporarily to the campus of Silehar Normal School. At that time, classes were held in the Morning shift. However, this temporary phase of crisis of accommodation was soon over. Gurucharan College began to receive generous help and assistance from different quarters and ultima tely it was able to acquire permanent space in its present state oflocation.

In fact, Gurucharan College came into being on account of the far-sighted vision of Late Bishnu Charan Dey Purkayastha of the Department of Education, Assam. To give a shape to his vision of establishing a college here at Silchar, he got the support of Late Kiron Sashi Nag, the widow of Late Guru Charan Nag, who came forward with a generous donation of Rs. I0,000, in 1 934 for the establishment of the college. The college acquired its name after Kiron Sashi Nag's husband Gurucharan and special emphasis was put on women education. This college was fortunate enough to have Arun Kumar Chanda, Bar-at-law and the son of Late Kamini Kumar Chanda as the founder Principal. Initially, the college had been affiliated to the Calcutta University. I n 1949, the college was affiliated to the Gauhati University. With the establishment of the Assam University (Central) at Silchar, in 1 994 Gurueharan College is now affiliated to the Assam University. Today, the college boasts of having a student enrolment of more than 4000 in Arts, Science, Commerce stream including BBA and Higher Secondary.

The course curricula and examinations of H.S Course arc conducted as per rules and regulations of Assam higher Secondary Education Council. On the other the three year Degree courses, with Semester system, are conducted as per the syllabi and examination rules framed by the Assam University, Silchar.

Besides these, from the academic session 2005-06, the college has come up with three UGC approved Career Oriented Programmes (value-added course) for the students conducted by the Department of Commerce. The introduction of different self-financing courses in the subject like Biotechnology, Computer Science (Passand Honours), Diploma course in Bio-informatics, Computer Application (DCA), Library and Information Science, Bengali Recitation, Spoken Sanskrit and Manipuri Folk Dance are added chapters to the glorious history of the College. The BBA Course is yet another added feather to the crown of the college. The newly introduced Mass Communication as elective subject in UG level has opened a new area of learning for the students of the college. Over and above, the college has housed IGNOU as a Centre of distance education facilitating both UG and PG Courses.

The year 2016 is a glorious year in the history of Gurucharan College for being reacredited as 'A' Grade with CGPA 3.11 under cycle 2 by NAAC, Bangalore. It has also been recognised as college with potential Excellence (CPE) by UGC. It is to be put on records that the college also possesses well-equipped Iibrary with its large variety of books, journals and magazines, e-journals and lNFLI BNET facility. The library also has collaboration with the M inistry of Culture, Govt. of India to assist in developing the Manuscript Resource Centre and National Manuscri pt Conservation in the library.

Guruchara n College also owns a sophisticated Central Computer lab, a magnificent auditorium, enriched Anthropological Museum, Bioinformatics Centre, Biotech Hub, two well-built hostelsseparately for boys and girls, and well-developed playground, two Units of NSS, NCC wings for boys and girls and so on. It has also made available well equipped gymnasium seperatel y for boys and girls, health centre, cafeteria, seperate common room for boys and girls and a printing press of its own. Keeping in mind the directives of the governtment, the college has taken initiative for cashless transaction. It is also one of the proud mem bers of Digital India Campaign.

Since the day of its inception, under the able guidance of our founder Principal A. K. Chanda, Gurucharan College has inherited a very remarkable legacy of work-culture, a sense of devotion and dedication which always inspires teaching and non-teaching staff to extend their whole-hearted support and co-operation for uninterrupted growth and development of this college. The objective of the college is : 'To Strive, to seek, to find and not to yield'.

Gurucharan College, Silchar does have the vision to impart futuristic education in different streams. It has undertaken comprehensive plan to introduce career-oriented courses to cater to the needs and requirements of the upcoming learners. The college has committed vision to instil a very high sense of dedication and discipline in the mind of the students and to ensure a global standard of education by imparting quality education. It has the vision to make the learners intellectually superior and ethically strong.It is also an indispensible part of the vision of the college to make it an ideal centre of higher learning, researches and career orientation.

Our pious mission is to educate students from all walks of life - urban and rural, the poor and the backward so that they become enlightened and empowered individuals qualified with multi-dimensional potentialities, having a sense of self respect along with commitment towards the self, the society and the nation. Our mission is not only to facilitate teaching-learning opportunity but also to provide scopes for researches, training, career-counselling. It is also our mission to develop the college as an ideal centre of learning for proper manifestation of the best in an individual learner's mind and character to make him or her a good citizen.
