A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE :
A proposal to setup a college to impart general Higher Education to the people residing in the newly urbanized southern most part of the town was mooted by some eminent educationists in the early part of 1970. A committee of some leading citizens was formed to start the college with the name New Silchar College in nearby Netaji Girls’ High School from the academic session of 1971. The need for an Institution of Higher Education in this area began to be generally felt, and two “Sebaiets” of the Estate of the deity Radhamadhab, Late Rajanikanta Saha and Smt. Sefalikana Saha, wife of Lt. Hrishikesh Saha came forward to donate a plot of land, measuring 1½ acres for the purpose, on condition that the college be named after the deity Radhamadhab. So, the college under the name and style Radhamadhab college formally came into existence on 31st May, 1971. Gauhati University granted affiliation to the college upto Degree of Bachelor of Arts in the year 1971. In 1983 the Govt. of Assam extended to the College grants in aid status. The UGC granted its recognition (2f and 12B) in 1992 and since then the college has been receiving UGC financial assistance for various development projects. The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee year in 1996. Since its inception, the University toppers of both Gauhati University and Assam University have added fresh laurels to its achievements and added many a feather to its cap.
AFFILIATION AND RECOGNITION :
Started as a single faculty of Arts in 1971, the college was granted affiliation first by Gauhati University in 1971 for the award of degree in Bachelor of Arts and then it came under the jurisdiction of Assam University Silchar (A Central University) in 1994 when it came into existence. The Govt. of Assam granted the College grants in aid status in 1983. The college also got its registration in 1983 under Registration of Societies Act of 1860.
ACCREDITATION :
Radhamadhab College is the first college from Southern Assam and first among the affiliated colleges under Assam University to be accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Executive Committee of the NAAC on the recommendation of the duly appointed Peer Team declared the College accreditated with C+ Grade. The college was reaccredited in 2016 (Second cycle) with Grade B.
MANAGEMENT OF THE COLLEGE :
The college is managed by a body of respectable personalities of the city, under the name and style “Governing Body”, constituted under the provision of Assam Non-Government College Management (Amendment) rules, 2009. Though the body is permanent in nature, but the tenure of most of the members in the body is generally three years. The body is composed of persons nominated by the Govt. of Assam from among the panels of personalities which include in it donor member as well as representatives from teaching, non teaching staff of the college and guardian members. The University nominates its representative to the body.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES :
Radhamadhab College has setup before it twin objectives – to provide the society and the nation with quality higher education; and to contribute to the physical, intellectual, aesthetic and moral growth of the youths with a sense of commitment towards building a better tomorrow. The ultimate goal of the college is to make the Institute a centre of excellence in the field of higher education. The college shall take constant endeavour to prepare the students for their future career and thus to inspire them to play a meaningful role in the changing needs of the nation.
To achieve the goal, the college aims at –
(i) Providing the learners academic excellence in the respective field of study.
(ii) Preparing the learners for commendable career relevant to national need.
(iii) Preparing the students for life long learning by developing an appropriate learning style and aptitude among them.
(iv) Instilling a sense of discipline, ethical and moral values so as to make the learners responsible and ideal citizen of the country.
(v) Providing specialized skill oriented courses at different levels.
(vi) Transferring knowledge, skill and technology to the community through extension activities.
(vii) Exploring the innate creativity and talent of the learners and helping them develop into wholesome personality so as to enable them to contribute towards nation building.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME AND COURSES OF STUDY :
A. General Course :
1. Three year Degree Course leading to the award of Degree of Bachelor of arts (Pass and Honours course) and Bachelor of commerce (Pass & Honours Course) under Assam University, Silchar.
2. Two year certificate course of Higher Secondary (H.S.) Arts under Assam Higher Secondary Education Council.
B. Other Course :
1. Communicative / Spoken English for H.S. 1st year.
2. Computer Awareness for TDC 1st Semester.
3. UGC Sponsored Certificate Course in Functional English for TDC 1st and 2nd Semester.
4. UGC recommended Self-Financing Courses: Office Management, Diploma in Computer Applications, Tally, Diploma in Library and Information Science, Spoken Sanskrit Course etc.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, VALUE EDUCATION AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES :
In keeping with RMC avowed objectives, students are provided with all facilities both of extracurricular and co-curricular activities like debate, quiz, drama, music, dance, painting etc. which are essential ingredients for a regular course of study to promote inner quality of students. RMC annual function is one such activity in which students get opportunity to project themselves in the fields which interest them. One of the objectives of the College is to “Instil among the students a sense of discipline, ethical and moral values so as to make them responsible and ideal citizen of the country” Keeping the objective in mind. RMC has created ample scopes of value based extracurricular activities in which students can participate for practising and developing value based education. Participation in extracurricular activities based on value education is compulsory for all students of the college. Inculcating civic responsibility through practicing of various extracurricular activities is another significant feature of the college and students are to participate in them when asked for.
ACADEMIC MONITORING CELL :
Teaching’s major components are content, communication and feedback. There is a close relationship between teaching and learning and it is possible to modify, improve and develop teaching quality by adopting various innovative methods. With these purposes in view, the college has adopted a “mechanism” to obtain improvement in teaching learning experiences and to ensure quality in academic life of the college by initiating “Academic Monitoring Cell” with the purpose of accomplishing the ultimate goal of the College.
NSS AND NCC :
NSS & NCC Unit of the college has taken extensive awareness programmes on areas of mutual benefit to local people. The Centre organises various awareness programmes in which opportunities are created for students to participate in them, and to develop their personality.
STUDENTS’ HEALTH CARE CENTRE :
RMC has health care facility for students. The Centre provides the students of the college with periodical health checkup and other necessary advice by physician to keep their health fit. The centre organise talks, health awareness programme etc. for the benefit of the students.
CAREER GUIDANCE CELL :
In todays fiercely competitive environment, most students find themselves on the horns of a dilemma when they come to choosing a career because they do not know exactly what career is available, and also because they lack basic information on well known ones. Keeping this in mind RMC has opened a Career Guidance Cell in the college campus. The Cell organize seminars, talks etc. on various career avenues and self employment. The Cell subscribes to many books on career guidance, information bulletin, information booklet on further higher studies etc.
SPORTS FACILITY :
The philosophical corner stone of the college is “Healthy mind in healthy body” and multidimensional development of the young students. Keeping this in mind, RMC is creating an excellent facility for games and sports. Facilities for indoor and outdoor games like Volley ball, Foot ball, Cricket, Badminton, Table tennis etc. are available. The Sports Cell also runs Gymnasien Centre with modern Gymnastic facilities. Durin g the session 2016-17 the centre has been renovated and introduced with more sophisticated instruments for the betterment of the students. The sports section of the college is affiliated to District Sports Association, Silchar. The sports section of the Students Union organises sports meet which encourages the students in games and sports.
RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION CELL :
The College has publication Cell which publishes journal annually comprising of articles, write ups, writings on various subjects, research findings from different sources for enriching the quality of knowledge on different spheres and also to encourage academic pursuits for overall quality improvement. From last year, cell has been publishing its journal with ISSN and three edited books has already been published with ISBN. Cell has plans to organise workshop relatign to research and each importance in academic arena.
SELF FINANCING CELL :
The college has Self Financing Cell which will run the following Self-Financing Courses for the Academic session 2021-22 :
a) Computer Courses for H.S. and Degree Students :
i) Office Management (3 Months Duration)
ii) Diploma in Computer Applications (DCA) (6 Months Duration)
iii) Certificate Course in Accounting Package (Tally 9) (3 Months Duration)
b) Diploma Course in Library and Information Science (1Year Duration)
U.G.C. SPONSORED COURSES :
a) Certificate course in Functional English. (For Degree Students Only).
b) Remedial coaching for SC/ST/OBC/Minority (For Degree Students only).
NATIONAL ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION COUNCIL (NAAC) :
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore, re-accredited Radhamadhab College on 18th January 2016 (for 5 Years ) at ‘B’ level.
